Laptops, while once a luxury, are now widely used, specifically since the prices have dropped so much in recent years.. However, laptops offer users a convenience not found in a desktop computer; they can be taken with you wherever you go. This convenience, however, can come at a price if the laptop is not taken care of properly. Below are 5 tips on how you can get the most out of your laptop.

Keep Your Laptop Safe from Intrusions

Few things can destroy your laptop faster than viruses and malware. Use reputable and proven anti-virus software to keep your laptop free from intrusions, hackers and other malicious attacks. Remember that your software is only good if it’s current, so make sure it’s always updated. You may also consider keeping the laptop password protected if it’s often left unattended. Always back up your data in case it is somehow lost or destroyed.

Protect Your Computer’s Processor and Fan

Laptops are portable and can be used almost anywhere. However, although they’re called laptops, they really not designed for use on your lap for extended periods of time. They also should not be left on soft surfaces such as couches or beds. Doing so can restrict the computer from “breathing”. The air needs to be able to move freely through the vents or it will overheat, which can damage your processor. Consider getting a laptop blower.

Utilize Your USB Ports

Most laptops come with at least 2 USB ports so you can get more use out of your unit. The USB ports can be used for external hard drives, memory flash and USB drives, wired and wireless mouse, printers and more. By utilizing all your USB ports, your laptop can offer the convenience of a laptop with all the additional features found in desktop computers.

Wired or Wireless Capabilities

Laptops are most popular for their ability to hook up to the Internet from almost anywhere. Utilizing wireless capabilities allows users do research, work or just surf the Web from any wireless network. Through the use of fiber optic cables, users can communicate with friends and family members or watch videos from almost any location in the world. Wireless printers make it easy to print from your laptop. Basically, these days, you can do almost anything with a laptop that you can do with a desktop computer, but one of the main differences is the use of Cat 5 cables with a desktop. Obviously, a laptop is convenient for many reasons, but make sure you take advantage of both your wireless options, or the use of specialized cables to enhance your use.

Know Your Laptop

Often when computers stop working, they just suddenly shut down. Even if you suspect what the problem is, you’ll need to know the make, model and serial number of the laptop. Write this information down and store it somewhere other than on the laptop. You’ll also need this information if you want to order specific parts. Additionally, write down license keys for all software that you may need to reinstall after work is done on the laptop.

If you’re new to the world of computers, it is best to learn as much about your specific laptop as possible so that you can make sure that you are taking proper care of it. You can get valuable information about your laptop from the internet, the outlet from which you purchased it, and dozens of other outlets. If you are familiar with computers, it is good to stay caught up with new updates in technology to make sure that you are using your device to its full capacity.
