The prospect of traveling in time has always been fascinating, so it’s no surprise that lots of movies have been made on this subject. Some of these movies are quite entertaining and thought provoking. Others, such as the Back to the Future series are funny as well. At the same time, there have been a good number of really awful movies made about time travel. Here are 5 of the very worst.

1. The Time Machine (2002)
H.G. Wells’ story The Time Machine is a true classic of science fiction literature, but this movie does not even come close to doing it justice. Part of the problem with this film is that the computer generated graphics are silly and often unintentionally comical. The plot, involving humans fighting an evil race called Morlocks is confusing and not very logical. All in all, this is a poor tribute to a great time travel story.

2. The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006)
The original Butterfly Effect, while not exactly admired by most movie critics, was at least interesting and has attracted a sizable cult following. The sequel, however, is simply a confusing and uninspired rehashing of the first film. The story involves a college student who travels back and forth in time in an attempt to alter tragic events in the past. Yet all we get is a series of chaotic scenes that are difficult to relate to in any way.

3. Masters of the Universe (1987)
This movie, based on the action figures He-Man and Skeletor, is basically a live action version of a cartoon. The characters are able to travel anywhere in space and time using a device called the Cosmic Key and most of the plot involves He-Man and his allies shooting it out with Skeletor’s armies. This movie will only appeal to kids who are addicted to these toys, and even they will find the special effects and bad acting tedious.

4. Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)
You can tell by the title of this film that it wasn’t exactly aspiring to be a serious study of time travel or anything else. It’s the story of three middle-aged friends who travel back in time in a magical hot tub to the 1980s, where they predictably attempt to recapture their youth and learn some lessons about life in the process. While the movie is silly and cliched, it’s a good reminder that some good times in life can come in hot tubs sold by companies such as Bullfrogspas.com.

5. Time Chasers (aka Tangents) (1994)
This is a low budget film that has the alternate title Time Chasers. Either way, it’s a silly tale of an airplane that is turned into a time machine. The inventor of the time machine has good intentions, but it is seized by a villain who causes problems that threaten to destroy the world. This movie is bad enough that it was featured on the Mystery Science Theater 3000 series, which pokes fun at some of the worst science fiction movies ever made.
These are some of the worst time travel films of all time. Some may be worth watching for laughs. But remember, once you have wasted 2 hours of your life on one of these, you probably won’t be getting it back… Or will you?
