Movie Rumours: Lance Armstrong

When Lance Armstrong came clean on the Oprah Winfrey show about his use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDS) during all seven Tour de France wins, the US news media began its feeding frenzy.

Sensationalism sells, and anytime the media sees blood in the water, they pounce. So it’s really not surprising to me that Paramount Pictures recently purchased the rights to a book by Juliet Macur titled “Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong.”

In fact, the timing is impeccable for chatter to start about a Lance Armstrong movie; with the topic of doping a hot subject right now it is the absolute best time to test the waters for a new movie. Releasing information that implies Paramount’s interest to produce a movie about the fallen cyclist is sure to get people talking, and talk equates into legitimately free advertising. In fact, the timing of the book rights deal is so convenient I feel it is proof a movie will be made.

While details about the actual film, or how it’d come together are scarce or non-existent, what is known is this:

  • The rights to the book were acquired by Paramount Pictures
  • JJ Abrams’s (Star Trek, LOST, etc) production company Bad Robot is involved
  • There’s Talk of Matt Damon or Bradley Cooper playing the role of Lance Armstrong

Although most movies can be produced in a short amount of time once all the details are figured out there currently isn’t a director, writer, star, or start date for this movie. Which means the possibility of it coming out in anything less than two years is slim to nil. However, stranger things have happened in Hollywood so we’ll have to wait and see. If a movie is made it will be interesting to see which picture it paints of Armstrong as a lot of the “feel” of the movie will be left up to the writer. The only question I have is, will they throw Lance under the bus, or paint him as a victim who fell to the pressures of racing?
