Living within striking distance of the Golden Mile in Leicester, I’m always eager to notice what new eateries have popped up, and believe me new ones do keep cropping up. So, right in the heart of Belgrave Road, Veg Hut has opened its doors.

Veg Hut is an Indian vegetarian restaurant taking the site of what was previously Madhuri’s. On its menu they have Italian, Mexican, Indian, Indo-Chinese and Pizzas. There’s enough variety there to be able to find something that you really like.

I decided to take my wife out for a meal; she being a vegetarian made Veg Hut an ideal restaurant. Saturday night and the place was packed; we had a 15 minute wait before we could get a table, and there were people still pouring into the joint.
Eventually, we got shown our table and we took about 5-10 minutes to peruse through the menu before ordering our food along with some soft drinks.

With the restaurant pretty much full, we realised the food may take a little bit of time before arriving, however, I didn’t expect the drinks to take so long to arrive. It was over 10 minutes before our drinks came; even then the waiter went to the table next to us thinking they’d ordered it when it was ours. At this point I was thinking they will not be getting any tips from me.

For the starters I decided to try something different, so I opted for the Chipolte Hongos; fried mushrooms in abodo sauce which is served in a deep fried tortilla (see pic). There’s not much really I can say other than that I really enjoyed it and would definitely have it again.

My other half opted for the Crispy Fried Vegetables and it’s exactly as the name suggests. It was very tasty indeed and she really loved it. It’s a great dish to share with someone, as having it alone it can be filling unless you have a very large appetite.

For our mains I opted for the Enchilada, which comes with a choice of 3 different fillings, I decided on the Sautéed Paneer filling. My other half decided to have the Szechuan Rice, one of her favourite dishes.
The Enchilada I had was very nice indeed, and it was very filling indeed almost to the point I struggled to finish it. You might be better off having a light starter if you’re to have this. As for my wife’s rice she had no complaints what so ever with it.

As far as the food goes it did not let us down one bit. This is an Indian vegetarian restaurant; however there is not much of a variety on the Indian side of the menu so if you like traditional Indian food you may want to give this a miss. If it’s Mexican or Italian you’re looking for then do give this place a try.

The restaurant itself is slightly on the small side, and if like me you go in as a couple you will be disappointed to notice that the tables for 2 people are quite small. Another thing they need to improve on is their service, I understand Saturday nights are very busy for most restaurants but service levels should never be lacking in any establishments.
One final disappointment was that upon paying for the bill (the prices are very decent here) I was informed that they do not take cards, cash only! So an unnecessary trip to the cashpoint was needed.

Even though there were a few negatives, I would definitely go back there for the food alone.
