The Gray Ox Inn

The Gray Ox – Marston’s Food Pub of the Year 2010, is a Gastro Pub which dates back to 1709 and has a commanding position overlooking Brighouse, Huddersfield and the surrounding countryside.

“The Gray Ox is a ringing endorsement to the ever expanding, always truthful foodie grapevine that first whispered its name – and a veritable king among gastro pubs when so many are but pretenders to the throne.” (On:Magazine)

Originally a farm house/ale house, locals would frequent the Gray Ox, jug in hand, to be served from barrels which used to be by the door of the bar. The Gray Ox offers everything that you would expect from a quaint country pub and you will still see many of the original features. However, the food is so much more than you expect. The Gray Ox boasts a fantastic, ever-changing menu and they focus themselves on using local produce and delicacies to produce the most stunning cuisine. They hand pick select wines in conjunction with Cellar 28 to accompany your meal. Set alongside roaring log fires the whole experience is relaxing and satisfying.

Dining at The Grey Ox Inn

Craig McDonnell, head chef of the Gray Ox, has worked his way through the ranks from commis chef to head chef at a range of hotels and restaurants. He also has a stage at The Gordon Ramsay Restaurant under his belt. His style of cooking is all about perfectly cooked fresh food and new flavours without over complicating things. The Ox sources as much food as they can locally and even have their own ‘kitchen garden’ where they grow a selection of produce including beetroot, white and red spring onions and rhubarb – perfect for a fresh and delicious crumble!
