Good, Bad or Ugly?
Now that the competition is at the last 16 stage, what’s your take on the World Cup so far? No doubt it’s one of the most eagerly awaited competitions in the world, and we’ve all waited so long for this World Cup to come, and here it is, but has it lived up to expectations?
In my opinion, no it hasn’t.
This was supposed to be the competition where we are to see which players deserved their World Class status. So far only Lionel Messi seems to be living up to his tag, as he has produced everything but goals. With France knocked out, we won’t get to see the talent of Franck Ribery, although in the group games he didn’t really impress much. David Villa is starting to show glimpses of why he is one of the best strikers in the world, and no doubt Fernando Torres would be hot on his heels had he not been injured. We’re also seeing flashes of brilliance from Cristiano Ronaldo, and we’re yet to see the magic of Xavi and Iniesta. Even Kaka has been relatively quite this World Cup; we’re just hoping the forthcoming games provide some truly mesmerising performances.
Another reason for the relatively mild World Cup could be the Jabulani ball. Most players and managers have complained about this new ball, but surely players who are paid 100k a week should be able to kick it in the general direction they want regardless of the kind of ball they use.
Some have said high altitude or maybe the heat? Nope i’m not buying that one either.
One thing is for certain though, I think the lower seeded teams have become better, hence the low scoring games. There was a time when the likes of Algeria would have been beaten handsomely, but not anymore.
I for one wouldn’t rule out one of the underdog teams to go all the way to the Final.
