Team India’s Rise To The Top

Indian cricket team are ranked number one in ICC test cricket after their innings and 24 run victory over Sri Lanka, which meant they took the series 2-0.

India are the third team to be sitting proudly on top of the ranking since they started back in 2000, the other two teams being Australia and South Africa. The reason for this turn around is the unity of the team and a great leader in Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The team now looks like they can challenge teams like Australia and South Africa in their own back yard.  They have the perfect openers in Varinder Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who will go out and put runs on the board and give the opposition bowlers something to think about.  Gambhir has hit 7 centuries in his past 10 innings and is ranked number 1 batsman in the world in Test Cricket.  However, his partner Sehwag was 7 runs away from making history by being the only batsman to have scored 3 triple centuries in test cricket.  He is the kind of opener who will be welcomed into any international team, as he will give you runs at a quick pace and in any condition, as he tries to play his natural game all the time.

In the middle order you have the veterans Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, who between them have broken all sorts of records.  Tendulkar just recently gone past 17,000 runs in test cricket just shows the talent of the man.

The bowlers have also played a part in taking the team to the top. We have Zaheer Khan who can swing the ball both ways, Harbhajan Singh who has been the main spinner since Anil Kumble retired.

There have been others in and out of the team but the names mentioned above have been the main reason for India’s rise.  Now we will have to see how long India can stay at the top, as they say in sport it’s not about getting to the top, it’s about staying there.
