Pav’s World Cup XI

With the World Cup over I thought I might create my World Cup XI. Let me know what you think and if you agree with it or not? I have decided to go with a 3-4-3 formation simply because it is always the attackers who impress the most and this is the best way of fitting in all the players that impressed.

Goalkeeper

I found it hard to choose a goalkeeper as none really impressed that much as some did have very good games but then you could probably blame them for making errors in other games. I will have to go with:

I Casillas – even though he could be partly to blame for the first goal Spain conceded in the tournament he did make an excellent stop from Robben in the final and saved a penalty earlier in the tournament.

Defenders

Gregory van der Weil – he was one of the few Dutch players that did not get booked in the final and performed consistently well throughout the tournament. Also I had never heard of him before the tournament started and he really impressed me.

G Pique – I think he is the better of the two Spanish central defenders and deserves his place in the team for helping his team win the World cup and the fact they only conceded two goals in the tournament.

Lucio – I know Brazil did not go far in the tournament but I just think Lucio is a quality player and would get into my team even if you do not agree.

Midfielders

A Iniesta – man of the match in the final so deserves his place in the team, him and Xavi together are the perfect combination in midfield and the only way to get the ball off then is foul them like Holland did.

Xavi – The other Spanish midfield master the one-twos he and Iniesta can play anywhere on the pitch are outstanding. When the pair are on form they are best combination in football.

W Sneijder – Holland’s best player in the tournament and if it was not for him they would not have got as far. After a wonderful domestic season when he won the treble with Inter Milan he would be disappointed to finish as a loser in the final. If Holland had actually tried to play football you wonder how much better he could have played in a better team.

Thomas Mueller – he won the Golden Boot award at the World Cup so had to find space for him in the starting eleven of this team. I have to admit I had never heard of him before the World Cup but everyone will know who he is now.

Strikers

David Villa – scored the majority of Spain’s goals. Would definitely start wide on the left as that is when he looks at his most dangerous cutting in and going for goal. Barcelona have got themselves a bargain as if they tried to buy him now I am sure his price would have gone up.

M Klose – the best out and out striker there was at the World Cup. With this team he could do what he does best and just stay in the penalty area and I am sure he would score penalty goals. The fact that he has performed so well at this World Cup and the two before it shows how a good a player he is even if he cannot get into the first team at Bayern Munich.

D Forlan – Voted Player of the Tournament so cannot really leave him out of my Team of the Tournament. When everyone was complaining about the ball this was one player that showed if you have quality the type of ball should not make any difference and that it was just being used as an excuse by some. Showed his quality especially in the way he was striking the ball even scoring directly from a free kick, which few managed to do.
