With the domestic season coming to an end all the football crazy fans will be looking forward to the biggest occasion in football, the World Cup. With about 7 weeks before the World cup kicks off (11th June 2010) in South Africa, I will be looking at England team closely, from now till the kick off I will look at the possible players that will help England achieve their dreams of lifting the trophy and becoming World Champions for the second time.
The things I will be discussing in the coming weeks will be, defence, midfield, the strikers, key players and formation/tactics, but to begin with we shall look the Goal Keepers.
The Keepers or sometimes known as ‘men between the sticks’, England has five contenders for this position, which are:
|Joe Hart||Manchester City on loan to Birmingham City||1||0||Made his debut against Trinidad & Tobago in June 2008.|
|Ben Foster||Manchester United||4||0||Was initially called up to the England World cup 2006 preliminary squad, but did not make the final squad. So made his debut in February 2007.|
|David James||Portsmouth||49||0||Made his first international appearance in 1997|
|Robert Green||West Ham United||9||0||Earned his first cap in March 2008 but made his first start on 6th June 2009 in 4-0 victory against Kazakhstan|
|Paul Robinson||Blackburn Rovers||41||0||Made his England debut in February 2003, not featured in starting line up for national coach Fabio Capello|
I think 3 out of the 5 will be on the plane to South Africa, but which 3? David James and Paul Robinson have to go with all their experience. So that leaves 1 out of Joe Hart, Ben Foster and Joe Hart, I will go for Joe Hart as he has had a great loan spell at Birmingham. Ben Foster is good talent but is injured and Robert Green has not had good season with West Ham United as they are just above the relegation position.
So who would your choice be? Who do you think deserves the gloves and keep international strikers at bay? Next week I will be looking at the defence which will be put in front of these keepers.
