In today’s digital age, much of what we love and cherish is contained in technological devices. Many of us have multiple expensive devices that merit some care and protection. Save yourself the pain of lost files and the cost of replacement – follow some quick tips for protection below.

Encase What You Can

Everyone knows that iPhones have hardshell cases. Phone cases – for more phones than just iPhones – come in a plethora of designs. While choosing a case, though, don’t just go for aesthetic appeal. Pick something that will protect your phone if dropped. Some industrial cases are even waterproof – something worth considering if your devices seem especially accident-prone. Similarly, cases for iPods can help ward off potential damage. If you bring a laptop places, get a case for that, too. Most laptop cases won’t protect against drop damage, but they can reduce the risk of water damage or scratching, etc.

Hide Your Phones, Hide Your Laptops

It may sound paranoid but there are plenty of people who, given the opportunity, would snatch up your gear in a heartbeat. The best way to keep from peaking the curiosity of thieves is to keep your devices out of view. Try not to leave iPods, phones, computers, etc. in cars or by windows – you don’t want the wrong person to see your gear. Don’t make it easy for a burglar! If you have a habit of leaving your devices out, the best thing you can do  is to stow them away. Out of sight, out of mind can be a true statement when it comes to thieves who are looking for some nice new devices.

Keep Your Living Space Secure

Home security can go a long way in deterring thieves and preventing property loss. Kansas home security experts suggest that their customers not only keep their devices covered but perhaps keep them in a safe or locked container. This may seem paranoid, but if you are leaving your devices for a long period of time, it could be a good idea. If you have a security system in your home, you can deter burglars by displaying your security cameras or even security decal signs. Families who use Vivint in Charlotte NC have found that they are less likely to be robbed if they display their security decal in the window or on the front lawn.

Device Insurance

You can get a belonging insurance policy in case your technology (or other possessions) end up stolen. This isn’t something you hear about too often, but it can be a lifesaver if your home is broken into. Especially if you’re short on cash and would have trouble replacing stolen items, this is definitely something to consider. If you live in an area that often has home or car break-ins, this insurance is definitely worth looking  into. It will save you money in the end if you insure your devices from the beginning. That way, if they get stolen, you’ll be able to get a new one much sooner.

File Backups

Protecting your gadgets means also protecting the data they contain. File backup is an underused way to help hold onto what’s important. Invest in an external hard drive for your computer’s files and back up contacts on your phone. In the event of a theft or crash, you’ll be thankful that all your work or vital information isn’t lost forever. This is a preventative measure that is definitely worth your time and investment.

It doesn’t take much time or money, and protecting your tech is absolutely worth it. All it takes is some extra thought and basically common sense. If you are debating whether your stuff is safe, try to think like a thief. Would your device be easy to steal? This will help you to make sure you are choosing the best methods for keeping your property out of the hands of burglars. Keep your technology safe and your files protected – it isn’t something you’ll regret.
