No one can doubt that Hollywood is probably the biggest and most well known movie making industry in the world. All would be actors have aspirations to make it big in Tinseltown. Hollywood has a long standing history of producing some great actors past and present. If you think back to the days of Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Vivien Leigh, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, James Stewart, Audrey Hepburn and many more who have given us some memorable performances on screen.
The actors of today continue to give us just as mesmerising performances from actors such as Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Will Smith, Meg Ryan, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Samuel L Jackson, Jim Carrey, Nicolas Cage and many, many more. The prized asset for any actor is the much coveted Oscar, the pinnacle of ones career.
The Indian film industry is better known as Bollywood. We all know Bollywood as the all-singing, all-dancing film industry, as a majority of its movies all contain singing, dancing, colourful costumes and exotic locations. Like Hollywood itself, the mainstream Indian movie industry is one of the biggest movie making franchises. Like its American counterpart, Bollywood too has a glorious history. It too has produced some iconic superstars of the film industry. With past actors like Shammi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi and many, many more. Some of these actors were so highly revered that then became style icons, as fans would adopt the same style as their star. It could be said that Amitabh Bachan is the last remaining superstar of the golden era, as the others have moved on from the movie industry. Even today he continues to give the fans memorable performances.
The Bollywood industry continues as strong as ever with current stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and many more. However, they have a fair way to go to reach the iconic status their predecessors did.
One thing we have never seen in the past is the amalgamation of the two movie industry heavyweights, until now that is. I think Hollywood is starting to realise the commercial benefits, in terms of revenue and a huge fan base, of joining up with the Indian film industry.
We are now slowly seeing the ball rolling as stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Kylie Minogue, Ali Larter, Denise Richards, Snoop Dog as well as others getting in on the Bollywood bandwagon, while in the opposite direction we see the likes of Aishwaria Rai Bachan, Salman Khan, Mallika Sherawat and others trying to make it in the Hollywood industry.
It seems like we are witnessing a blossoming relationship between the two great movie industries.
I for one, hope it long continues and prospers.
