Is Bollywood Getting Sexier Year By Year?

It seems in the last 10 years or so, we have seen a dramatic change in the Bollywood industry, in the way actors and actresses present themselves in movies. Barely 10 years ago, we would see actors and actresses hardly show off their flesh. It seems that back then the Bollywood profession was based around ones acting abilities, as we used to get powerful performances from the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit.

Fast forward 10 years, and how times have changed. It’s all about 6 packs, bulging biceps for the guys, and mini-skirts and tight tops for the ladies, something we would rarely see in the industry 10 years ago. It would seem one has to follow suit in the Bollywood industry just to stay ahead of their rival professionals. The industry is now asking the male actors to be toned and muscled and the female actresses to be slim and sexy.

Two actors who have been setting trends in the modern era, and this is only my personal opinion, are Salman Khan and Emraan Hashmi. Salman Khan the heart-throb of many a girls, famous for always showing off his toned and muscular body, is probably the first actor that comes to my mind that decided to tone himself up. Many actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Saif Ali Khan have followed suit, maybe feeling a little bit threatened that they may get left behind, remember it is all about the money, sponsorships pay really well when you have a killer body. Now we move onto Emraan Hashmi, who’s made a career out of breaking a traditional Bollywood taboo, kissing on-screen. Rarely did we get to see a leading pair kiss on screen as it just wasn’t acceptable, until now. Emraan now holds the nickname “serial kisser”, as in nearly every movie he has made; he’s had a kissing scene.

So the Bollywood trend is slowly changing, and the boundaries continually being pushed all the time. 10 years ago, any form of sexuality in movies, was purely suggestive, as the movie hinted that the pair were going to kiss or make love, without actually showing any form of intimacy. However, nowadays, the sexuality is a lot more expressive, and Emraan Hashmi certainly expresses it, as do the female actors who are quite happy to be in clothes that bring out their sexuality. Actresses like Mallika Sherawat, Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif have all embraced the modern Bollywood culture.

Part of the reason to this change in Bollywood industry, is that more and more films are now becoming more westernised, with an emphasis on big budget action movies, and with that must come glamour.

One thing is for sure, the fan base in India isn’t quite ready for the boundaries to be pushed any further in the mainstream Bollywood industry, although controversies will always be there for the picking. What the future holds for Bollywood no one knows, but we sure look forward to it.
